Smiley Monroe produces Fire Retardant Impact Bars for Geo. Robson & Co.
06 July 2009

Smiley Monroe Ltd has shipped anti-static, fire retardant impact bars to Geo. Robson & Co. (Conveyors) Ltd, Sheffield, as part of an order for offshore equipment for the Oil Exploration Industry. Their final destination is Norway, where they are to be used on a specialised conveyor designed for carrying the drilling tubes on an offshore Oil Rig. The customer states that Smiley Monroe’s short lead time for this specialised product was one of the reasons decisive in securing the order.

Very High Product Performance and Safety Specifications

Peter Winfield, Purchasing Manager, Geo Robson & Co, comments: ‘In this specialised and demanding industry Smiley Monroe were able to provide impact bars suitable for use offshore which fulfilled the very high product performance and safety specifications.’

Used widely in the bulk handling industry, from quarrying to mining, impact bars are an integral part of Conveyor Belt Support and Spillage Control Systems at conveyor load and transfer points. A combination of rubber, aluminium and UHMW polyethylene, impact bars, unlike conveyor rollers, which can eventually seize and act like a brake, absorb the impact of heavy, often sharp, material, not the conveyor belt; the low friction polyethylene surface allows the belt to continue moving freely, preventing unnecessary damage to the belt or drive motor.
With no moving parts and excellent wear life, impact bars are maintenance free, can be individually replaced and offer a relatively quick return on investment; when you consider the cost of lost production through downtime, repairing or replacing conveyor belts and ongoing clean up costs.

Custom Made

Jeremy Cross, Smiley Monroe’s GB Sales Manager, explains ‘Our many years’ experience manufacturing moulded rubber products, means we can react quickly to offer customers bespoke items, designed to suit their specific applications. In this case, the conveyor, which will run entirely on impact bars, is reversible, so both ends of the impact bars are tapered and the UHMW polyethylene and rubber has both anti-static and fire retardant properties. We also used galvanised steel for the T-section, rather than aluminium, to prevent sparking and corrosion and stainless steel for the custom made, anti-corrosive, T-bolts, nuts and washers.’

A family company for over three generations, Geo. Robson & Co Ltd has built an enviable reputation for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of efficient Bulk Material Handling systems to market leaders in industries such as steel, glass, cement, ports, sugar processing and alternative fuel handling, where their quality of design and technical flair have been tried and tested in the most demanding environments.
