Smiley Monroe is preferred supplier for Clydeport Hunterston
20 May 2009

Clydeport Hunterston has chosen Smiley Monroe as its preferred supplier, after a lengthy appraisal process involving several meetings with potential suppliers, for the procurement of two sectional vulcanising presses to service its Hunterston site in Scotland.

Northern Ireland based Smiley Monroe Limited - celebrating 30 years in business – specialises in the design, manufacture and service of conveyor belts, screen media, chute linings, rubber gaskets and conveyor spillage control systems for end users and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the UK & Ireland markets, with export worldwide. Industries served range from quarrying, mining and cement to timber, agriculture and recycling.

Clydeport Hunterston's dry bulk terminal, one of the finest in Western Europe, is part of Britain's second largest group of ports, Peel Ports, which handles a broad spectrum of international trade amounting to more than 65 million tonnes of cargo a year. The key ports of Glasgow, Greenock, Hunterston and Ardrossan provide a wide range of facilities and services, serving Glasgow, Scotland and the North of England, handling more than 12 million tonnes of cargo a year. Hunterston offers a depth of water up to 26 metres, enabling ships up to 350,000 tonnes to berth at all states of the tide to discharge coal which is moved by a mile long conveyor to a highly mechanised stockyard of 120 acres.

The Smiley Monroe/Shaw Almex Advantage

As preferred supplier, Smiley Monroe will deliver two Canadian made Shaw Almex SVP Sectional Vulcanising Presses, which have been custom designed to suit the customer’s requirements. A maximum operating pressure of 175 psi was specified, making this SVP suitable for both steel cord and fabric conveyor belting up to 1600mm wide; while its rugged aluminium alloy construction, combined with a very versatile split platen arrangement, means the SVP will safely meet all the requirements across the Hunterston site for many years. Additionally, Smiley Monroe will provide a spares package, tool kits suitable for all vulcanising operations, initial training for the vulcanising teams at Hunterston and on-going training and support as required.
Des Friel, Smiley Monroe’s Site Service Manager, explains ‘One of the important advantages of Shaw Almex Vulcanising Presses comes from their unique design feature - an air bag/water system that delivers even pressure across the entire joint area, ensuring a consistent vulcanised joint time after time.’

Excellent overall package

‘We selected Smiley Monroe as the key supplier who offered an excellent overall package, displaying the capability to meet all of our requirements to the standards required at Clydeport. In addition, Smiley Monroe was able to accommodate our preference for the equipment to be delivered within a tight schedule. This allows us to conduct on-job training with Smiley Monroe, during the summer period, in preparation for winter: an extremely busy period for Clydeport Hunterston. We are looking forward to building a long term commercial relationship with Smiley Monroe.’
Barry Carson – Purchasing Manager, Clydeport Operations Limited

Smiley Monroe’s GB Sales Manager, Jeremy Cross comments ‘Shaw Almex and Smiley Monroe worked hard to meet the terms of Clydeport Hunterston’s proposal and we are delighted with the outcome - our Training Programme, designed to meet the customer’s specific vulcanising requirements, is already underway.’
