Smiley Monroe Cutting it in the Movies

Smiley Monroe’s rubber cutting technology helps Northern Irish short short film achieve the desired look for a Japanese Samurai costume. ‘Yuki’, selected for the 2011 Belfast Film Festival, is showing on Saturday 9th April at QFT, Belfast, as part of the Short Film Competition. Yuki is a Northern Ireland Screen and Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation funded film. The Irish/Japanese short directed by Jonathan Beer and produced by Brain Falconer is about to commence its festival circuit.

Yuki’s world has changed. With no medical diagnosis for her mother’s mysterious illness, Yuki (Haruka Abe) knows it’s time to face her own demons if she has any chance of saving her mother. Click here to visit the Yuki Facebook page to find out more.

YUKI Selected for Cannes Film Festival!

Just days after its premier in the short Film Competition at the Belfast Film Festival, 'Yuki' was selected for Cannes Short Film Corner. Organised by the Festival de Cannes, 11-22 May, the Short Film Corner is designed as a showcase for films and a meeting place for directors, producers and international buyers.

YUKI Just Selected for Galway Film Festival!

Following selection for Belfast Film Festival and Cannes Short Film Corner, 'Yuki' has just been selected for competition in the the forthcoming Galway Film Fleadh, from 5 -10 July 2011. The Galway Film Fleadh - Ireland’s leading film festival - is a six day international film event held every July and welcomes a mad diversity of filmmaking from around the world.

Cutting with the latest technology

Rubber conveyor belting with 1 ply of fabric was chosen over metal or leather, due to its flexibility and strength. Also, when aged and sewn together, the rubber costume allowed the actor greater freedom of movement when performing fight scenes.  A CAD drawing, supplied by the filmmakers, was imported directly into nesting software. Smiley Monroe then cut the rubber parts using the latest CNC automated cutting technology, which is capable of cutting and drilling profiles, patterns, holes and slots in a variety of materials - from 20mm rubber to less than 0.2mm foil - including PVC, PU, EPDM foam, neoprene, foamex, plastic, polystyrene, polypropylene, kevlar, carbon fibre, laminates, fibreglass, cork, cardboard and leather.
